Ponsse is a consortium partner of OptiForValue, a CBE JU funded international project

OptiForValue aims to optimize forest value chain management to increase their value, competitiveness and sustainability, as well as forest resilience.

The OptiForValue-project was accepted for funding by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), which is a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) that funds projects advancing competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe.

Ponssse is one of the partners of this international project, which is led by Luonnonvarakeskus LUKE. CBE JU contribution is approx  €5 million and the duration of the project is four years.

Objectives of the project:

  • Develop and upgrade non-invasive solutions for forest health monitoring and wood quality control, as well as enable the development of risk assessment tools for drought, fire, insects, and snow damage.
  • Design and develop sustainable forest management methods to restore and enhance forest health and increase biodiversity.
  • Develop the forest sector’s operational capabilities to meet new opportunities and challenges under changing climate conditions, contributing to agile value management.
  • Understand the environmental and social impacts of the forestry solutions and their economic feasibility via the application of environmental, social, and economic life-cycle assessment (LCA).
  • Demonstrate the practical contribution of methods and solution approaches developed and implemented in the project for optimizing forest value chains.

Impacts of the project

With the implementation of OptiForValue, the expected impacts include:

  • Improving the overall environmental impact of the forest management practice.
  • Optimising the application of the cascading use of biomass in regional industry ecosystems.
  • Increasing engagement and innovation capacity of regional and local actors, including bio-based industry and SMEs, as well as social impact in rural areas.
  • Strengthening the application of the hierarchy of materials used, trade-offs, synergies, business models, and participatory approaches with positive environmental, social, and economic impacts on regional and rural development.
